How to have lucid dreams

Let’s back up a step.  Perhaps you’ve arrived at this blog looking for lucid dreaming techniques because you’re just starting out.  You want to learn how to lucid dream and while the tips and tricks here are helpful, you are looking for it all to be boiled down to answer the question: What do I do first?  The answer to that question is actually quite easy: In order to have a lucid dream, you need to first make sure you are remembering your lucid dreams…well actually what we mean is that in order to be sure that you actually remember the lucid dream that you successfully have using the lucid dreaming techniques here and elsewhere, you have to make sure you remember them!


So our first how to step in lucid dreaming is taking a little while and using simple techniques to remember your dreams.  This can include suggestions made to yourself before you go to sleep, the use of a dream journal first thing in the morning, and even waking yourself up in the early morning hours during the time you are likely dreaming to make it easiest to remember.  Even these simple steps will help you more routinely remember your dreams, and only then will it be worth investing time into learning how to lucid dream.

BUt let’s assume you are now remembering your dreams and want to do the quickest and easiest thing possible to have a lucid dream.  One way to jump start the process of having a lucid dream is to use the power of visual cues to trigger you to know when you are dreaming and when you are not.  To encourage a lucid dream tonight, make it a point of looking at your reflection whenever possible today – through the obvious means like when you are in a bathroom, to less obvious like looking in reflective store windows, your spoon at lunch, or your smart phone.  Stare at the reflection and look at the details…and while you are doing so ask yourself “am I dreaming?”  Get in the habit of using any and all opportunities when you are not dreaming to look at your reflection or the reflection of any part of yourself, and make there be an automatic trigger that makes you ask yourself if you are dreaming.

Why are we making such a big deal about noticing reflections in your waking life?  In a lucid dream you will not be able to see your reflection, or your reflection will be distorted.  So one of these times you will be looking for your reflection, asking yourself if you are dreaming, and the image will become distorted…congratulations – you are in a lucid dream!  One further piece of advice: During this initial phase of the lucid dream do not rush into the dream world…as if thanking your dream state for allowing this technique to work, just relax and consider the distorted reflection for a minute.  Enjoy the fact that you are in a lucid dream!  Then slowly look around and see what there is to see…even if the dream does not last too much longer you know you are capable, and you know this lucid dream how-to technique worked.

Another possibility is to do a verbal reminder.  Throughout your day today, at least 100 times, ask yourself this question: “Is this a dream?”  Make it so that no matter what you are doing, you ask that question.  Accelerate this towards bed time, asking the question constantly.  When you are dreaming you will also ask the question, since it has become such a part of your day (and how many times have aspects of your day been incorporated into your dream meanings!).

It is absolutely okay to deviate from your lucid dreaming technique routine.  If you routinely practice wake-induced lucid dreaming (WILD) techniques, it is fine to switch to dream-induced lucid dreaming techniques (DILD) for variety or when you have a slowdown.  Learning how to lucid dream takes practice and patience, and your own lucid dream techniques can vary to give you the best chance for a wide variety of experiences and success.

Switch lucid dream signs every so often, adding new ones to your repertoire.  If you routinely use the technique of looking in the mirror many times per day (because when you do this in your dream you will be distorted), use the technique of looking at your hands many time instead (since hands will usually be distorted in dreams).  Varying your dream signs can help bring new power to your routine, and new options to use during the daytime techniques to enhance your chances.
